After spring webinars from LAS Webinar Series, we invite You to join us for the continued fall webinars organised by SLAS (Society for Laboratory Animals of Slovenia).
Webinars will be held once a month via Webex platform during the 4-month period (from September to December):
- 21st September 2022 13:00-14:00 Monika Spiri, University of Zurich, Switzerland
- Subject: Positive reinforcement training as a refinement tool in feline experimental studies
- Summary: For many veterinary clinical research studies involving cats, replacement and reduction is not yet feasible. Therefore, refinement is a valuable option. To avoid risk-associated repeated anaesthesia, the training of laboratory cats for clinical examination and blood collections using positive reinforcement (PR) with food rewards is contributing to the refinement of the studies and provides both physical and mental enrichment for the cat. Different approaches for PR training with cats are presented. The presentation further covers the first steps involved to start a training and some video footage of training in progress are shown.

- Subject: General considerations for the rehoming of animals used for scientific and educational purposes
- Summary: The EU Directive 2010/63/EU contains the first legal framework for rehoming animals used for scientific and educational purposes. Research on rehoming practices and outcomes is increasingly available. In 2018, a FELASA Working Group was convened to develop rehoming
recommendations. This presentation discusses the general protocol of these recommendations, including general considerations for an appropriate rehoming scheme.
